WAYS TO KEEP YOUR CHILD’S MENTAL HEALTH INTACT DURING LOCKDOWN

As the covid-19 pandemic is gripping its hold even more tightly on us which is resulting in the extended lockdowns and schools and offices remain closed, there occurs an inevitable need to support our children to manage themselves and foster positivity.

Here are some tips you can consider to support your child’s mental health:-

1) Engage and converse

The aim is to keep children busy which can be done by engaging them in the activities of play, study and also by involving them in the household chores which can be as simple as telling them to fetch certain things from the fridge for arranging the plates for dinner or may it be watering the plants for a little older ones. But never forget to interact in between. This can be in groups having a family chit-chat or a small parent-child talk. Board games or indoor games can also be considered.

2) Keeping a routine

There needs to be a balance or a schedule for your child. This would not only help them but even the parents to plan their day amidst the ‘work at home’ routines. But let it be a flexible and relaxing one never like the ones in schools. By keeping a pattern parents can easily identify even the smallest change in the child’s behavioral pattern. Children can be easily identified whether doing well or not. But again let it not be a military strict schedule like waking up early.

3) Let your child know the situation around

Provide them with the right details in the simplest manner about what is going around, some details about the disease and also its effects, but cleverly avoiding the negative things like the number of deaths and its severe impact. Creating awareness is the key. Let them know that it’s normal and this too shall pass on.

4) Workout sessions

Physical health aids both the body as well as the mind. Hence fun workout sessions can be planned for an hour every day. This can be a few yoga postures, a few minutes of Zumba steps that most children would enjoy, or the age-old regular types. The point is to let the body be active and moving which will result in a positive mindset.

5) The ‘me time’

Everyone wishes to have a personal space to be able to remain alone and enjoy without any prattle. This is meant for your children too. With lockdown, children get no such proper space having all the family members around them full time. Hence let them be on their own for some time of the day doing the things they enjoy. But do not forget to take a peek at the very little ones in between.

All these things point to the basic fact that the parents need to take time in between their busy schedules to engage and interact with their kids. And thus by nurturing a trusting relationship, your child’s mental health and physical well-being can definitely go a long way.
